IRVING PARK. This Irish pub has been garnering an increasingly steady following since its opening in 1973. The pub is part restaurant, part club as it features a full menu of authentic Irish food (fish and chips, shepherd's pie, and Irish sausage) as well as live music nightly. The best local, regional, and national acts perform on Abbey's stage, and the musical mix includes everything from Indie Rock to traditional Celtic music. The interior features balcony seating, warm wood floors, and stone walls. Cover charge starts at $6 depending on the musical act.

RIVER NORTH. Large front windows, a high ceiling, and an antique bar greet folks who step inside this Irish pub. Brehon pub is warm and welcoming and features a jukebox and efficient staff. The drink menu includes a number of beers and ales with about 12 or so on tap and a handful available by the bottle. Basic bar eats, including appetizers, burgers, and sandwiches are available. Outdoor socializing spot available during warm weather.

OLD TOWN. Burton Place attracts a yuppie crowd that fills up this three level establishment in a hurry. The late hours make this a favorite among serious night owls, and the kitchen is open well into the night. Seating by the fireplace is first choice during winter months, and the upstairs pool room makes for a great escape if the downstairs area gets too full. Private rooms are available for parties.

THE LOOP. Sporting a basement location on West Washington near City Hall, Cardozo's Pub serves as a watering hole for the city's political and legal movers and shakers. Business types come here after a long day to chat with fellow patrons and relax with a drink or two. Daily drink specials are usually a good option. Bar food such as burgers, salads, and sandwiches are at the ready as well.

THE LOOP. Located in the Monadnock Building, this bar and restaurant offers business types a place to hang their hats during lunch or after work. The entrance is tucked away in a rather nondescript alley, with the only clue to its existence being a green and white striped awning. Green leather and warm wood tones greet guests upon arrival. The menu includes a mix of sandwiches, pastas, salads, and burgers as well as a laundry list of beers.
